Hajj Season 2019: Traveling to Makkah

Hajj Season 2019: Traveling to Mecca

This month, millions will make the journey to the holy city of Makkah, and preparations have already begun for this year’s Hajj season, the approximate dates being 9 to 14 August.

A Look at 2018

Last year, Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics recorded a total of more than 2.3 million pilgrims who performed Hajj:

  • 612,953 domestic pilgrims
  • 2,371,675 foreign pilgrims

Saudis accounted for 211,736 of the total number of domestic pilgrims. In regards to foreign pilgrims, 94% arrived by air, 5% by land and just 1% by sea. This resulted in over 1.6 million passengers using air travel to perform Hajj.

Visa Requirements

Visas are required for those traveling to Makkah and should be organized well ahead of the scheduled travel dates.

Hajj visa application forms are available at the nearest Saudi Consulate. However, it is most advisable to coordinate with an approved Hajj travel agent to arrange the visa as well as all travel and accommodation requirements for the Hajj season.

There are some important considerations in obtaining a Hajj visa, such as:

  • Those who have performed Hajj within the past 5 years will not receive a visa. However, in certain cases, there may be exemptions to this rule.
  • The pilgrim applying for a visa must possess a non-refundable round-trip ticket and the relevant reservation confirmations.
  • While the Hajj visa is free, applicants should submit payment for pilgrimage services, covering guides, Zamzam water agents, transportation costs, and tent accommodation. Pilgrims can pay for these services using two certified checks, or one check for both fees, payable to ‘Unified Agents Office’ in Jeddah.
  • Pilgrims must submit proof of vaccination for meningitis and ACYW135.
  • Children may accompany their parents, but any applicant under the age of 18 will not be granted a Hajj visa if they are not being accompanied by family.
